TBA Holly Hildebrand is a collector. She collects bits and pieces of discarded or forgotten items, storing these treasures away for some later investigation in her studio. Triggers for memory, long forgotten or even buried, Holly uses letters, journals, and images as a physical representation of a past both real and imagined. Hildebrand explores in her work how meaning might be uncovered by the very act of covering up, layering one piece upon another in a narrative that is enacted between image and implied story, fragments coalescing to create suggestions. It is Hollys hope that the images she is presenting will remind or stimulate the viewer to recall moments or stories from their own past. The odd moment and comment we sometimes remember, from stories we have heard first-hand or have been passed down and slightly transformed by each telling, begin to take shape in our own fabric of being. They add to our sense of identity, as it is these stories and moments that help us each define, in some way, who we are. |

Dorothy Knowles (b. 1927, Unity, Saskatchewan) is one of Canada's top landscape painters. She studied art in the late 1940s and early 1950s at night school and summer school in Saskatoon and Emma Lake and briefly in London, England. A turning pointing in her career came at an Emma Lake Artists Workshop in 1962 when she was encouraged by the American critic, Clement Greenberg, to pursue painting from nature regardless of the contemporary predominance of abstraction. Her paintings from the mid 1960s to the present have had an enormous influence on younger painters across Western Canada, acquired in part through Knowles' frequent presence as both participant and leader at Emma Lake Artists Workshops. She has continued to paint prolifically in watercolour, acrylic and oil throughout her career - working in a variety of different manners and using a range of subject matter. Her works bring to life the rich and colourful landscapes that surround her home and studio and her paintings have found homes in some of the most prestigious museums in Canada. She curreently lives in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. |
Dates: February 11-13, 2011 The workshop that was held in February of
2010 in Esterhazy was such a huge success, |
An enormously successful evening was enjoyed
by more than 200 people on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010 Tickets were $25 per person, with all of the proceeds of the evening (with the exception of art and book sales) going to the Esterhazy Community Daycare Centre. |
The exciting thing about this workshop is that it was so well received and appreciated that many requests were made to Helen to offer the course again next spring. Helen agreed, and the field trip workshop will be slotted into the EDAC schedule for some time in the spring or early summer. That workshop will be similar to the one held on Sept. 11th. Then, following that, at a time agreeable to all concerned, Helen will present the workshop outlining more advanced techniques, as the logical next-step in this series of workshop. More details will be available closer to the time. Photograph: "Sheep at Spiller's Cove" © 2009 by Helen Solmes |

24, 2009 This festival was a joint effort by the Lions Club of Esterhazy, the Esterhazy & District Arts Council and the Day care Cooperative, combining the bi-annual wine fest as the Lions' fall fund-raiser for charity and the annual EDAC art show, formerly billed as Autumn Skies. NOTE: Because of the tremendous success of this combined festival, the Lions Club has decided to present another such festival in 2010, instead of 2011. They have invited EDAC to once again join with them in making another outstanding evening of wine and fine art for the patrons of both items. Therefore, another Cultural Festival of Fine Wine & Art will be held in October of 2010. Watch this site for more details as they become known. Excerpts
from the Annual Report of the Visual Arts Chairperson to the Board
Members
On September 27 & 28, 2008, we held a Non-adjudicated Art Show which featured 14 artists displaying a total of 52 pieces of art. The entries were a mixture of paintings, photographs, henna art on canvas, crop art and papier maché. Sixty-one people attended the reception. We held a people's choice award during the receiption as well as a silent auction. Both went over very well. Auction items were donated by the EDAC members. The Literary Arts Division of the Arts Council set up a table to autograph and sell their new book, In the Shadow of the Burr Oak - An Anthology. Seven artists attended a workshop led by Crystal Howie on "Professional Issues." Crystal talked about the packaging of art to mail out, resources and sources of income for artists, and a general discussion on what the artists found to be either helpful or a barrier in their pursuit of creating art. Thanks to Pat (Arndt) we always have some fantastic school tours. November 13 to 18, 2008, we held the exhibit "Tattoo" at the Esterhazy High School. This compelling exhibition featured art by three of Canada's leading tattoo artists, Jarret Clarkson, Andres Merrill and Craig Fenrick. Approximately 240 people attended. April 10 to 19, 2009, was the showing of "Light, Line and Imaginings," an intimate look at Harvard Zavedosky's photography. It was a smashing success with approximately 600 people attending. A big thanks goes out to Helen Solmes for preparing this show and Brian and Elaine Tochor for the facility. Their effort was very much appreciated by the council, the community and Harvard's family. Also a big thanks goes out to Juanita Heembrock for making us some fabulous easels to display art for this show and many more shows to come. The final project to date was the 1st annual, combined adjudication with Yorkton and Melville--PRADO--on May 29 to 31. Twenty-seven artists participated from the area, two of which were from here (Esterhazy & district). There were 137 pieces of art on display. There were some fabulous workshops held throughout the weekend--Caricature, Photographing your art work, finding the extraordinary in the ordinary and writing an artist statement. There was also a panel discussion with the two adjudicators, Kate Davis and John Noestheden, (as well as) Don Stein from the Godfrey Dean and Jennifer Schell McRorie from OSAC. It went over very well... Thank you to everyone for all your hard work this year; it has been another productive year. I am looking forward to this year as the visual arts coordinator, now that I have more time to do a better job. Thanks for being patient with me. Jocelyn
