Entry form for Public Art Show on October 2nd , 2010.

Name:________________________________

Phone Number _________________________
E-mail ________________________________

This is our second art show in conjunction with the Lions Winefest. Last year was a huge success and because of the response we expect this year show to surpass it. We have made some changes because of the sheer volume of art that needs to be hung in a short amount of time. This year we will be setting up 6' x 10' booths with the dividers for the paintings and photography. The artists will be allowed to bring in as much art as can fit nicely in that space (that is 22' total length). There is a limit of 23 artists so get your entry in early. We will supply the dividers and the hanging devices but you will be required to set up and take down your pictures. For artists that don't have enough art to fill a booth we will combine them with another artist.

We will have a family viewing time in the afternoon for those wishing to bring children or do not wish to attend the evening event.

Anyone wishing to donate an item for the silent auction can let us know. The funds raised in the auction will be given to the chosen project of the year.

It is understood that the artist will:

• pay a $10.00 entry fee. The entry fee goes up to $30 after September 15th.
• you will be required to purchase a ticket for the evening event if you wish to attend.
• provide all work ready for display, including secure hanging and/or framing as necessary.
• complete and attach labels with your name and the title to the back of the artwork.
• if you are interested in selling your art work it will be up to you to provide contact information on the display card provided by the Arts Council (these cards will be displayed by your art work whether or not it is for sale). It will be up to the interested person to contact you directly if they have questions. It is up to you if you want to display a price on it or not. If you are not present the Art Council is willing to sell your art and collect the money for you if the purchaser does not have any questions.
• bring the artworks to the Esterhazy SN Boreen Community Center (800 - 4th Ave) October 1st between 6:00 p.m.and 7:00 p.m. or make other arrangements with a friend or family member to deliver and hang or display it.
• take work home or arrange for pick-up of your art work after the show on October 2nd.
• arrange to have your artwork insured against theft or damage if you so desire as the Arts Council does not provide insurance.

It is understood that the arts council will:

• organize and advertize the exhibition.
• will be present throughout the entire exhibition.
• take every safeguard to ensure the safety of the artwork.

The Art of Relief Printmaking

Date of Workshop: TBA
Time: TBA
Place: TBA

What is Relief Printmaking? A relief print is an image created by a printmaking process, such as woodcut, where the areas of the matrix (plate or block) that are to show printed black (typically) are on the original surface; the parts of the matrix that are to be blank (white) having been cut away, or otherwise removed. Printing the image is therefore a relatively simple matter of inking the face of the matrix and bringing it in firm contact with the paper; a printing-press may not be needed as the back of the paper can be rubbed or pressed by hand with a simple tool.
(View this video for a detailed explanation of Relief Printmaking.)

History of Relief Printmaking: Wood was the first form of printmaking used in the Far East to print patterns on cloth. In the 5th Century, it was used in China for text and images on paper. It was also used in Europe in the 1400s (and slightly later in Japan) for woodcut images. Different surfaces used for this form of art have been wood, lino, metal, plastic, foam.

Under the talented direction of Juanita Heembrock, this workshop will be aimed at
grade school children (specific grades TBA). Instead of preparing a wood block, the children will be given styrofoam blocks for ease of carving, and careful supervision will be provided throughout the entire process. Phone Juanita for more information at 877-2065.

Date: February 6 and 7, 2010
Time: 9am to 4:30pm both days
Place: P.J. Gillen School, Esterhazy

Ward Schell

Regina Beach artist Ward Schell received his art education at the Emily Carr School of Art in Vancouver, the University of Regina, and the Banff School of Fine Arts. Ward has exhibited his work in many solo and group exhibitions throughout Saskatchewan and has displayed his work in group exhibitions throughout British Columbia. Ward began teaching a variety of painting and drawing classes at the Neil Balkwill Civic Arts Centre in Regina in 1990 and has given numerous workshops on drawing and painting throughout Saskatchewan.

He was the Artist in Residence for painting at the Neil Balkwill Civic Arts Centre between 1994 and 1998 and was also awarded a Saskatchewan Arts Board, Artist in Residence grant along with his wife, artist Jennifer McRorie, for the Town of Regina Beach in 1998-99. Ward has been painting dioramas and wall murals in Museums and Science Centres throughout North America since 1989.

His love of nature and travel has taken him around the world, painting and drawing the people and the diverse landscapes that he encounters. Ward and his wife continue to visit Europe regularly and have fallen in love with the French countryside of Provence, where they guided a painting tour in 2004.

For more details on the workshop itself, go to About Us.

Note: Because of the huge success of this workshop, Ward was invited to return in February of 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. It looks like it's a go for all five years. More details of date, time, place and fee will be posted as they become known.

A Cultural Festival of Fine Wine & Art

Date: October 24, 2009
Art Show & Wine Fest: 7:30 pm - 12:30 am
Place:
S.N. Boreen Community Centre

This festival was a joint effort by the Lions Club of Esterhazy, the Esterhazy & District Arts Council and the Day care Cooperative, combining the bi-annual wine fest as the Lions' fall fund-raiser for charity and the annual EDAC art show, formerly billed as Autumn Skies.

NOTE: Because of the tremendous success of this combined festival, the Lions Club has decided to present another such festival in 2010, instead of 2011. They have invited EDAC to once again join with them in making another outstanding evening of wine and fine art for the patrons of both items. Therefore, another Cultural Festival of Fine Wine & Art will be held in October of 2010. Watch this site for more details as they become known.

For more details about this very successful event go to About Us.

Excerpts from the Annual Report of the Visual Arts Chairperson to the Board Members
at the Annual General Meeting - September 28, 2009

On September 27 & 28, 2008, we held a Non-adjudicated Art Show which featured 14 artists displaying a total of 52 pieces of art. The entries were a mixture of paintings, photographs, henna art on canvas, crop art and papier maché. Sixty-one people attended the reception.

We held a people's choice award during the receiption as well as a silent auction. Both went over very well. Auction items were donated by the EDAC members.

The Literary Arts Division of the Arts Council set up a table to autograph and sell their new book, In the Shadow of the Burr Oak - An Anthology.

Seven artists attended a workshop led by Crystal Howie on "Professional Issues." Crystal talked about the packaging of art to mail out, resources and sources of income for artists, and a general discussion on what the artists found to be either helpful or a barrier in their pursuit of creating art. Thanks to Pat (Arndt) we always have some fantastic school tours.

November 13 to 18, 2008, we held the exhibit "Tattoo" at the Esterhazy High School. This compelling exhibition featured art by three of Canada's leading tattoo artists, Jarret Clarkson, Andres Merrill and Craig Fenrick. Approximately 240 people attended.

April 10 to 19, 2009, was the showing of "Light, Line and Imaginings," an intimate look at Harvard Zavedosky's photography. It was a smashing success with approximately 600 people attending. A big thanks goes out to Helen Solmes for preparing this show and Brian and Elaine Tochor for the facility. Their effort was very much appreciated by the council, the community and Harvard's family. Also a big thanks goes out to Juanita Heembrock for making us some fabulous easels to display art for this show and many more shows to come.

The final project to date was the 1st annual, combined adjudication with Yorkton and Melville--PRADO--on May 29 to 31. Twenty-seven artists participated from the area, two of which were from here (Esterhazy & district). There were 137 pieces of art on display. There were some fabulous workshops held throughout the weekend--Caricature, Photographing your art work, finding the extraordinary in the ordinary and writing an artist statement. There was also a panel discussion with the two adjudicators, Kate Davis and John Noestheden, (as well as) Don Stein from the Godfrey Dean and Jennifer Schell McRorie from OSAC. It went over very well...

Thank you to everyone for all your hard work this year; it has been another productive year. I am looking forward to this year as the visual arts coordinator, now that I have more time to do a better job. Thanks for being patient with me.
